How a Chair Mat Can End Your Writer’s Block

Every person who writes often enough experiences writer’s block. While this used to be limited to people who wrote books for a living, it’s now something that affects people in nearly every field of work. That’s because the widespread use of the Internet has made it more important than ever that companies are providing their clients with information that’s interesting to read. So what do you do when you’ve got material to write for your website or blog and you just don’t know what to write about?

The key is to get yourself writing about anything at all, generating ideas on paper to get your brain working again. The quickest trick for doing this is to find an object that is near you and to start writing down everything that you can about it. For example, look at the office chair mat that is underneath your desk chair. At first, it looks like it can only be used for one purpose. But start thinking creatively and you’ll see that it could be painted and framed as art, cut up and sewn into a shirt or shredded into strips and used to package something for shipping.

As you begin to write down all of these ideas, your thoughts will begin to flow. If the first item you choose leaves you stuck, try another one. The reception chairs in the lobby or the office chair you’re sitting on might be the thing that gets you thinking again. By freeing up the creative side of your brain, you’ll get yourself back on track. The writer’s block will be over and you can get back down to business.

Heh. This reminds me of a creativity workshop I had conducted, where I told participants to pick an idea, object or theme and just list out related ideas (applicability not needed). There was this participant who had taken off from the paper he was writing on, and had listed various things he could make from it or do with it: write, make a boat, make a house, write poetry, make a roll, write list, write shopping list…. :D

I guess sometimes the block is better.
