When Your Family Goes Beyond Your Threshold of Knowledge

My uncle is an avid hobbyist. My mom tells me stories of him learning how to create rockets as a kid and building small-scale cars that would race around the house on edge, tearing up holes in the carpet. It was no surprise then when he started drafting plans to create his own airplane in his backyard the other year. In fact, we were all rather interested to see what he did with the thing, considering the success he had had in the past.

Two months later, after an NSN part search for almost everything you can imagine, a bucket full of mismatching fasteners and a rudimentary understanding of avionics and the basic knowledge that he would need to fly the thing, my uncle had put together his first aircraft. That said, we were all very fearful that he would seriously injure or kill himself.

That first flight was probably the most harrowing experience my aunt ever witnessed and with me being the only family member in the area, it was my job to make sure his family did not see him nose dive if he messed up. For everyone’s sake (except maybe his) it was lucky the plane did not even take off. A sputter, a few feet up and it plopped back down to earth. A short attention span took care of the rest.
