3 Tips for Networking to Build Links

A popular way to build links is to network with other blogs, websites, and discussion boards online.  While this type of link building campaign can be hugely successful, you need to follow the rules of the game.  Here are 3 tips for building link popularity through social networking.

  1. If you are commenting on blog posts, make sure your comments are relevant.  For instance, if you were a representative from Sierra Instruments you wouldn’t be leaving comments on someone’s fashion blog.  No one will care about what you can do with a liquid flow calibrator there — unless it offers a new way of washing delicates!
  2. Make sure your comments add to the discussion.  Pretty much every blog owner knows what it’s like to get blog comment spam.  If you want your comment — and your link back to your site — to not be deleted, you need to make sure your comment is constructive.  For instance, if you are commenting on a post about a ultrasonic water flowmeter, contribute something worthwhile to the subject, such as information or an opinion that was not already included in the blog post or prior comments.
  3. Build a reputation as a respected member of the discussion board.  Before intruding with links to your website left and right, make sure you build a positive reputation for yourself among the discussion board’s members.  Once that is done your links will be welcomed by other members.

Building links through social networking is pretty easy, and probably one of the more enjoyable ways to market your business.  Just make sure you do it right, as spamming blogs and discussion boards is a good way to ruin your business’s reputation online!
