What is Link Popularity?

You may have heard that link popularity can help give your website higher search engine rankings. But what is link popularity?

Essentially, link popularity is the number of links to your website that other webmasters and bloggers have on their sites. The logic is that the better your site is, the more people in the online community will like it, and the more links it’ll have pointing back to it. So by increasing the number of links back to your site, you can help to boost your search engine rankings.

There are many ways to improve your website’s link popularity. These things can be done yourself, or you can hire a link building expert or take advantage of an online marketing company’s link popularity services package.

  • Blog. Maintaining a blog generally attracts readers, and if you’re lucky they’ll link to your blog and/or website.
  • Participate in online communities and forums. These sites offer a great way to get links. By communicating with other people online, you are increasing your chances that people will find your site, admire it, and link back to it. You can also put a link to your site in your signature on a forum or comment board, ensuring that every time you participate in a discussion, you’ll get another link to your site (and possibly some visitors from the forum).
  • Write marketing articles. Marketing articles are free articles that you publish on distribution sites online. When someone reprints the article, they have to keep the “resource box,” the promotional information at the end of the article, intact. If your article is reproduced online, this means you’ll get a link back to your site every time someone new publishes the article.
  • Exchange links with other sites. If you find a site on which you’d like a link to your site, you can email the webmaster and suggest an exchange of links: You’ll link to his site if he links to yours. Sometimes this approach works, and sometimes it doesn’t.

If you decide to take these steps yourself, keep in mind that they can be very time consuming. Marketing your business can sometimes be a full-time job in and of itself. That’s why many marketing consultants offer Internet marketing services, which often include link building services. Hiring one of these companies can often pay off in the long run by leaving you to run your business while the experts handle the marketing aspect.
