Why Microsoft Will Never Go Away

People have been making a big deal of out Microsoft’s steady decline since Ballmer took over from Gates in 2000. It’s been a big deal in many tech and business sectors, but honestly, does anyone actually think Microsoft is going anywhere? I’m not saying it won’t happen eventually, but definitely not any time soon. That’s like saying Ford could have gone out of business in the 1940s just because they started getting more competition from international automakers. It just wasn’t going to happen. Powerpoint designers around the world will tell you that.

Of course all the Powerpoint tips and Powerpoint templates sitting on desktops might start to go to waste if the company keeps its current pace. Ford may have run the show for a century, but they eventually fell off, with competition rising and them failing to adjust to market conditions. Microsoft seems to be doing the same thing and with big failed risk after big failed risk, they make mistakes. Vista, the Zune, Microsoft Live, the Yahoo! merger – all busts thus far. That’s not to say they’re doomed. They still have a LOT of money and the presence of Windows and Office on every business PC in the world is a good first step.
